You open your dashboard and see a big red arrow pointing down. Your rankings have dropped. Cue the stomach drop.

Before you fire off an angry email to your SEO agency or rebuild your website, take a breath. Most ranking drops are temporary and recoverable. Here's how to handle it.

Step 1: Check if it's real

One day of data is noise. If your rank dropped from 4 to 12 yesterday and is back to 5 today, that's normal fluctuation. Look at the trend over a week, not a single day.

Step 2: Is it one keyword or all of them?

If only one keyword dropped, it's probably specific — a competitor pushed harder, or your page lost a backlink. If all your keywords dropped at once, something bigger happened.

Step 3: Was there a Google update?

Google rolls out core updates several times a year. If your drop coincides with one, you're not alone — half the internet is in the same boat. Check SEO news sites or your Rank Track dashboard for the date.

Step 4: Did you change anything?

Did you recently redesign a page, change your title tags, or switch hosting? Even small changes can have big effects. Revert if you can and see if rankings recover.

Step 5: Check your competitors

If a competitor suddenly jumped from page 3 to page 1, they did something — new content, new backlinks, or a fresh page. Look at what changed on their page and learn from it.

Step 6: Check for technical issues

Is your site still fast? Still indexed? Still on HTTPS? A broken page, a robots.txt mistake, or a slow server can tank rankings overnight.

Step 7: Don't overreact

The worst thing you can do is make a dozen changes at once. You won't know which one worked (or made it worse). Make one change, wait a week, measure, repeat.

When to actually worry

If your rankings have been dropping steadily for more than four weeks despite your best efforts, it's time to call in help — or take a hard look at whether your SEO strategy is still the right one.

The good news? With daily rank tracking, you'll catch drops early, while they're still easy to fix.
